19th Century Craft Barrel Chair

An antique, circular, warmly patinated all wood chair with softened edges created by hollowing out a naturally formed tree trunk. The seat is a separate, inset wooden piece, notched for a snug fit. Although clearly antique in its date of origin, the simplicity of its rounded, unadorned, purely functional, and prescient form echoes the tenets of modernism which would arrive in the next century. Evidence of hand hewing is visible throughout the chair and as expected there are cracks in the body resulting from expansion and contraction of the wood over the decades of its existance surviving in various environments.
